Medical Marijuana and Mesothelioma
There are two types of mesothelioma, both of which are cancers. One type of mesothelioma is affected by exposure to asbestos that is usually work-related; the other is caused by other types of cancer, such as lung cancer or cancer of other parts of the body. The “rare but serious” condition can be hard to tell apart from lung cancer, but it has many of the same symptoms. These include trouble breathing, lower abdominal pain, and weight loss, among other things.
Getting treatment for mesothelioma can be very difficult, and it can involve a lot of different things, like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and surgery, most of which have side effects that medical cannabis can help with. Raja Flores, head of Thoracic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, prescribes medical cannabis, says that he does.
Patients who come in and have a lot of problems are often told to see Dr. Flores. He is head of Mount Sinai’s Thoracic Surgery Department. : “It’s another thing you can use to help these people.”
Treatments, Symptoms, and Causes of Mesothelioma
In the United States, there are between 3,000 and 4,000 new cases of mesothelioma each year, according to Abestos.com. Most people who get mesothelioma are blue-collar workers who are over 65. There are four types of mesothelioma: peritoneal, pericardial, testicular, and pleural. Pleural is the most common, with 75% of people who get it having this type.
The National Cancer Institute says that surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiation treatment, are the four main ways to treat cancer, but there are many other options. Although some chemotherapy drugs may be used to treat certain types of cancer, they can have a variety of negative effects, including infections, tiredness, diarrhea, fertility problems in both males and females, insomnia, neuropathy, bleeding, and more.
A Cannabinoid-Based Treatment for Mesothelioma
According to Abestos.com, medical cannabis has been shown to help people with mesothelioma. They say it has been used for this purpose in 33 states.
“Patients with mesothelioma have to deal with the pain of the disease and the adverse effects of cancer treatment, like chest pain and nausea caused by chemotherapy,” says Abestos.com. “A clinical study found that healthcare marijuana may help some people with cancer and the side effects of their treatment.” Some of them are nausea and pain relief, less vomiting, better sleep, less anxiety, and improvement in their appetite.
The National Cancer Institute also says that medical cannabis can help with the pain of all types of cancer, including mesothelioma, which is a type of cancer. Citing several studies, the institute says that while it helps with other things, like unpleasant side effects, it also helps with pain. It worked better than morphine on its own to help 21 people with chronic pain, but when it was combined with vaporized Cannabis, it didn’t help as much. The National Cancer Institute has found that Cannabis extracts can help patients with advanced cancer whose pain is not relieved by strong opioids alone.
The goal for people with mesothelioma is to live as long as possible with the best quality of life possible. That is what medical cannabis can help you with.
